Asylum

Concept

Asylum is humanitarian protection available to people already inside the United States (or at a port of entry) who have been persecuted, or fear persecution, in their home country on account of race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. Asylum is requested using Form I-589 and must generally be filed within 1 year of the applicant's most recent arrival in the U.S. If granted, the applicant can remain in the U.S., work, and apply for a green card after 1 year. Asylum cases are typically complex, adversarial, and require an immigration attorney — Alvva does not handle asylum.
