Conditional Green Card (2-Year)

Also known as: CR-1, CR-2

Concept

When a foreign national obtains a green card through a marriage that is less than 2 years old at the time of approval, USCIS issues a conditional green card valid for 2 years (not 10). To convert it to a standard 10-year green card, the couple must jointly file Form I-751 (Petition to Remove Conditions) within the 90 days before the conditional card expires. I-751 requires proof that the marriage is bona fide — joint bank accounts, joint leases, shared bills, photos, affidavits from friends and family. Failure to file I-751 on time results in automatic termination of status.
