The Oath of Allegiance is the final step of the naturalization process. After USCIS approves your N-400 application and you pass the interview and tests, you are scheduled for an Oath Ceremony — either a judicial ceremony (in federal court) or an administrative ceremony (conducted by USCIS). You take the oath alongside other new citizens, renouncing allegiance to any foreign state and swearing loyalty to the Constitution of the United States. You receive your Certificate of Naturalization at the ceremony. Only after taking the oath are you legally a U.S. citizen; you can then apply for a U.S. passport and register to vote.
